Flesh and Blood

Patricia Cornwell

Synopsis:

It’s Dr. Kay Scarpetta’s birthday, and she’s about to head to Miami for a vacation with Benton Wesley, her FBI profiler husband, when she notices seven pennies on a wall behind their Cambridge house. Is this a kids’ game? If so, why are all of the coins dated 1981 and so shiny they could be newly minted? Her cellphone rings, and Detective Pete Marino tells her there’s been a homicide five minutes away. A high school music teacher has been shot with uncanny precision as he unloaded groceries from his car. No one has heard or seen a thing.
In this 22nd Scarpetta novel, the master forensic sleuth finds herself in the unsettling pursuit of a serial sniper who leaves no incriminating evidence except fragments of copper. The shots seem impossible, yet they are so perfect they cause instant death. The victims appear to have had nothing in common, and there is no pattern to indicate where the killer will strike next. First New Jersey, then Massachusetts, and then the murky depths off the coast of South Florida, where Scarpetta investigates a shipwreck, looking for answers that only she can discover and analyze. And it is there that she comes face to face with shocking evidence that implicates her techno genius niece, Lucy, Scarpetta’s own flesh and blood.

Read an excerpt

Dr. Kay Scarpetta and her FBI analyst husband, Benton, are looking forward to some personal time away to celebrate Kay's birthday. They are relaxing in their secluded back yard and have no idea how quickly their plans will change. Seven shiny pennies, left where no one should have been, are an early sign of how close to home danger can sneak in unnoticed.
Someone seems to be intentionally manipulating evidence and targeting people who have a connection to Dr.Scarpetta.

To make matters worse, something strange is going on with Kay's niece, Lucy. She seems distant and is behaving differently. As a very unusual case continues, evidence appears to point in Lucy's direction.

The feds and the local cops can't play nice with each other. There is no respect or cooperation between them. One of the anecdotes mentioned that resonated with me is about a farmer who tries to do the "right thing" when he discovers human remains on his property. His life is ruined by the justice and legal systems.

This addition to the popular Scarpetta series is a blend of personal interaction, forensic details, twisty suspense and danger as bodies pile up.

Some readers are in an uproar about the major cliffhanger ending. I can hardly wait to read how it continues!
I own most of the previous books in this series but I did receive this one as part of a blog tour in exchange for an unbiased review.

  1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this new Scarpetta mystery with us. A cliffhanger ending? That would be new for this series (I think). But in almost all series mysteries, there are unresolved plot threads to allow for continuity over the course of the series.
